Appleton Arts and Culture

Appleton Arts and Culture presents the occasional art workshop. Registration is required in advance, as space is limited. Email appletonartandculture@gmail.com to register. Send class fees to Appleton Art and Culture at 120 W Schlieman Appleton, MN.

Watercolor Batik: May 4, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., $45; instructor Ruth Hanson. Create a watercolor batik piece from multi-layering melted wax and watercolor on rice paper. Supplies included; if you have your own paints, you can bring them. Bring your own lunch. Class size limited to 12.

Weaving Laptop or Shoulder Bag: May 6, 13 and 20, 5 to 9 p.m., $35. This three-session class will teach participants how to set up, weft and warp to weave their own laptop or shoulder bag. Participants will learn how to make their project their own with added things like buttons, driftwood, beads, etc. Class size limited to 15.

Granite Area Arts Council

Granite Area Arts Council has several classes scheduled. Sign up for all classes at the K.K. Berge Gallery, 320-564-4240 or online at www.granitefallsarts.org/registration . All classes require prepayment. Class size is limited and registration deadline is one week prior to class.

Carving: April 25, 5 to 8 p.m., $30, ages 10 and older. This introductory course is geared for beginning carvers that have some or no experience wood carving. We'll introduce the best and safest knife stroke techniques for beginners as well as get the chance to try many different types of carving knives. All materials provided. Class size limited to eight.

Greenwater Garage

Greenwater Garage in New London hosts regular weekly art workshops for adults. Each session requires attendees to provide their own materials, and each session may be attended either in person or via Zoom. All skill levels are welcome. Mondays We Paint — Octopus: April 22, 6 p.m., $10. We meet regularly on Mondays to study a unique subject or technique. The evening will include a review of the materials we’ll use, a simple demonstration and guidance through making a small-format painting. Attendees are invited to ask questions, share your work and participate fully in the workshop. You can use this series as a starting point or as inspiration for your continued painting practice.

Tuesday Night Drawing Club — Snail: April 23, 6 p.m., $10. On Tuesdays we inspire each other while we learn the fundamentals of a continued drawing practice. These lessons are granular, non-linear and based in the essential principles of art: form, line, composition, value, texture, light and shadow. The focus of every exercise is practice – start where you are and learn something new.

Hutchinson Center for the Arts

Spring Cards: May 9, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., $25, ages 16 and older; instructor Maureen Froemming. Learn several different paper crafting techniques to make three greeting cards. Sentiments will vary. No experience necessary. Many paper crafting techniques will be used in the class, including stencils and blending brushes, embossing, liquid watercolors and stamping.

Watercolor and Ink: May 18, 3 to 5 p.m., $25, ages 16 and older; instructor Alexis Ammerman. Explore using watercolor and ink while creating a 9 by 12-inch finished piece ready for framing.

Little Theatre Auditorium

The New London Little Theatre is offering Sound Studio recording workshops in May, June and July. The workshops, which will cover audio recording, live sound and live streaming tech training for anyone looking to learn, will be taught by professional audio engineers, Luke Harper and Bethany Lacktorin. Air Fryer Veggies: April 17, 6:30 to 8 p.m., virtual; instructor Kirsten Madaus; $25. In this class Kirsten will demonstrate a variety of recipes using in-season local and/or commonly available vegetables including Lemon Pepper Broccoli, Miso Sesame Kale Chips, and Roasted Sweet Potatoes. Participants will receive an extensive handout along with the link to join prior to class.

Spring Cookie Decorating: April 18, 6 to 7:30 p.m., Jefferson Learning Center; instructor Charlene Bzdok; grades K-7; $29. Come and have fun with your friends while you enjoy spring cookie decorating. At the end of this class, you will bring home beautifully decorated spring cookies to share with your family. A fun class activity is also planned while the cookies are drying.

Rock Painting — Potted Plant Faces: April 20, 10:30 a.m. to noon, Jefferson Learning Center; instructor Sarah Miller; $7.50. Join us in painting flower pot rocks. These designs feature potted plants with expressive faces to give them each a unique personality. The class will begin with a brief demonstration by the instructor followed by time for painting. All supplies are provided.

Clowning Workshop — Makeup and Balloons: April 20, 1 to 4 p.m., Jefferson Learning Center; ages 10 and older; instructors Teresa Frank and David E. Peterson; $15 per person or $25 per family. Spend the afternoon learning fun and friendly make-up techniques and making a wide variety of balloon creations! Professionally trained clowns, Cupcake and Flapjack, are excited to share their tips and tricks with you. Balloons and pumps will be provided for use during class. Please bring your own makeup kit.

Glass Mosaic Flower Stepping Stone: April 23, 5:30 to 8 p.m., Willmar Senior High School; instructor Laura Ruprecht; $89. Join mosaic artist Laura Ruprecht in creating a unique Mosaic Flower Stepping Stone for your garden. We will all be creating the same design, but you pick the colored glass to cut and adhere to your cement paver. All materials will be provided, including a "takeout bag" of grout to finish your project at home.

Let’s Propagate Plants: April 26, 5:30 to 6:45 p.m., Jefferson Learning Center; instructor Pamela Vruwink; $15. Looking to expand your indoor plant collection? Create new plants from existing plants in this hands-on class. Course fee includes plant cuttings and a container. Please bring along a thermal tote bag to protect your cuttings while leaving the building and traveling home in cool temperatures.

Kids DIY — Mason Jar Vase: April 27, 10 to 11 a.m., Jefferson Learning Center; instructor Camilla Wenberg; ages 5 and up; $19. Start with a glass mason jar, add a little paint and decoration, and presto: you have a pencil holder, or a great spot to stash your favorite rocks, or maybe even a vase to gift a friend.

Milan Village Arts

Milan Village Arts classes have been scheduled with the complete schedule on the website. Members receive a discount on tuition. Supply fees are paid to the instructor at the end of class. Picture framing, two-day: May 17-18, 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, instructor John Kellen, beginners, minimum age 16; members who have taken this workshop have access to the framing studio to work on their own projects; tuition $115.

Advanced wood spoon carving, three-day: May 28-30, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, 9 a.m. to noon Thursday; instructor Fred Livesay; experienced spoon carvers that have made at least 20 or more spoons, minimum age 16; class begins with a thorough examination of spoons from all angles and what makes good and great spoons including; wood choice, design and proportions, bowl and handle shapes. Carvers will be challenged to design new spoons, copy others and learn how to “see.” Good hand strength is a must for this class; tuition $225, supplies $25; registration deadline May 11.

Open carving night: carvers of all persuasions are invited to meet from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at the school to carve and network. Free.

Silver Studio: open to all those that have taken beginning silversmithing and are MVAS members. Fee is $10 for evening and $20 for all day.

Weaving Studio: open to those with experience with looms or have taken the weaving rugs class and are MVAS members; by appointment or join a weaving group, no fee; looms are maintained with warp at no cost.

Framing Studio: a fully-functional framing workshop open to those who have taken the framing workshop and are MVAS members; $5 hour, $10 for half day, $20 full day; by appointment only.
