Arts and culture

Riot Theater Free Improv, Enjoy a FREE day of improv at The Riot Theater, Boston’s home for improv, sketch, and stand up in Jamaica Plain. New shows and classes start every hour, and we’ll end with an improv jam, open to all. Film at Jamaica Plain Branch Library, We are thrilled to announce that there are three opportunities to see The Man in the Cowboy Hat this fall! The film, a documentary about Carlos Arredondo, will show at the Jamaica Plain Branch Library on Thursday evening Oct. 5 at 6:30pm. Please join filmmakers Janice Rogovin and Laura McLam for the screening and Q&A following.The Man in the Cowboy Hat will also screen at the Newburyport Documentary Film Festival, September 15 – 17, and the Boston International Latino Film Festival, September 28 – Oct 1. SongBeat Circle, a song & drum circle hosted monthly on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30p.m. in the Parish Hall at First Church in Jamaica Plain.  Facilitated by a board-certified music therapist, SongBeat provides the community surrounding JP a place to sing and drum together. Egleston Square Branch library

Free Drop-In Homework Help, Mondays-Thursdays, 3:30-5:30pm, September 18, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27 & 28 (ongoing, daily) The library provides free, drop-in afterschool homework help for students in grades K-8 throughout the school year. Help is provided by trained, high-achieving high school students. This program is available at locations across Boston on days that Boston Public Schools are in session. Who designed Mt. Auburn and Forest Hills Cemeteries? Join us for a joyful tribute honoring General Henry A.S. Dearborn (1783-1851), the pioneer horticulturist who created these two magnificent sacred landscapes in Greater Boston. As a prime mover in the founding of Mount Auburn (1831) and as the designer of Forest Hills (1848), the tireless Dearborn embraced

the popular concept of the rural cemetery. Weather permitting, the lecture will

conclude with a short walk to pay respects to the General at his family lot on Mount Dearborn overlooking Lake Hibiscus. Forest Hills Cemetery – Forsyth Chapel, 95 Forest Hills Avenue. $15 for advance tickets, $17 at the door.

Arnold Arboretum Farmhouse, at 1090 Centre St. will be open to the public on Sat. Sept. 16. Guided tours are scheduled at 10am, 10:30am, 11am and 11:30am. Reservations by preferred time are suggested, tours proceed rain or shine. Coffee and light refreshments served. Children welcome; the building is not ADA compliant.
