City Councilor O’Malley to Host Dominican Flag Raising, Fri. Feb. 23, Piemonte Room (5th Floor) of Boston City Hall, 11am. Reception highlighting students and community leaders in the Dominican community in Boston.

Dining for a Difference Week, restaurants in JP will donate percentage of profits to Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition. Event organized by Boston for All. Tues. March 6 at Tres Gatos. Weds. March 7 at the Frogmore. Thursday Mar. 8 at Vee Vee. Friday March 9 at Casa Verde.

The 1st annual Mary Mulvey Jacobson Families in Need fundraiser. It will be held at Costello’s Tavern, 730 Centre St Jamaica Plain, on Saturday  March 24th from 8:00 to closing, $25.00 at the door. The Families in Need effort was started by Mary 20+ years ago giving complete turkey dinners to over 150 families at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Arts, music, and culture

Photography exhibit, New England’s wildlife is the theme of an upcoming photography exhibit at the Audubon Society’s Boston Nature Center in Mattapan. Local photographer and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Ben Achtenberg’s images, some of which have previously appeared in the Gazette, offer a close-up look at some of the beasts and birds who share the local environment with us, often unnoticed. The show opens on Sunday, February 18th and continues through March and April. There will be an artist’s reception from noon to 2:00 on February 25th. The Nature Center is open Monday-Friday from 9 am to 5 pm – on Saturday, Sunday, & Monday holidays, from 10 am to 4 pm. SongBeat Circle, a song & drum circle hosted monthly on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30p.m. in the Parish Hall at First Church in Jamaica Plain.  Facilitated by a board-certified music therapist, SongBeat provides the community surrounding JP a place to sing and drum together. Participants will hopefully gain a sense of connection with others, experience the healing of live music-making, and find some joy in their busy lives.  All ages welcome. Donation of $5 to $10 is encouraged.  No musical experience or talent required. Resist & Rejoice!, Monday February 26th, 7:00-8:30. Hope Central Church in JP. This event will feature a collaboration between the outstanding musicians of Petrichor and Poetry Slam Champion and local spoken word artist, Porsha Rashidaat J. Olayiwola. We’ll be raising awareness and funds for Boston GLASS, which provides a continuum of services to LGBTQ+ youth of color in the Boston area, and Student Immigrant Movement, an immigrant youth-led organization that fights for the liberation of the undocumented community. Free with suggested donation to Boston Glass/SIM.

Re-Read Me a Story, in March (date/location TBA). Wee the People returns with Re-Read Me a Story, a storytime for adults centered around social justice themes, with children’s stories read to live music accompaniment with Beatriz McConnie Zapater! In collaboration with the Connolly Branch of the Boston Public Library and Egleston Square Main Street. This will be a fundraiser for a youth group in Puerto Rico.

JP Dance Co-op’s “Parent & Child: Intro to Movement” dance course invites parent and child (boys and girls, ages 3-4) to explore movement and learn how to express themselves through dance. Class will include a mixture of Ballet barre, Modern basics, improvisation and free play. Youth/Families

Artists from Boston Lyric Opera will visit nine branches of the Boston Public Library system during school vacation week (Feb 20-24), to perform excerpts from Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel and show how music can tell a story. This one-hour participatory program features two professional singers, a pianist and a teaching artist, and engages young audiences through a melodic, active and theatrical presentation. Dismantling White Supremacy Film Series, Fri. Feb. 23, First Church JP, 6 Eliot St. This month’s screening, I Am Not Your Negro envisions the book James Baldwin never finished, a radical narration about race in America, using the writer’s original words, as read by actor Samuel L. Jackson. Alongside a flood of rich archival material, the film draws upon Baldwin’s notes on the lives and assassinations of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr. to explore and bring a fresh and radical perspective to the current racial narrative in America.
