Miroslav Bobek Obituary

Miroslav Václav Bobek

Knoxville - Miroslav Václav Bobek, age 79, came home to our Lord on Monday, February 8, 2021 after living his life to the fullest. Mirek was born in Krchlebská Lhota in the Czech Republic to Jan Bobek and Marie (Polenská), the oldest of four children. Mirek was a scientist, receiving his PhD in Chemistry and Biochemistry from the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague, Czech Republic. On December 30, 1967, Mirek married Libuše Anna Zelinková of Pabenice, Czech Republic, and then came to the United States in 1968 where Mirek worked as an exchange scientist at Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana. In 1970, Mirek and Libuše moved to Buffalo, New York, and soon after became United States citizens. They have two children, Miroslav Patrick (Eileen) Bobek and Yvonne Andrea (Richard) Bremer. Mirek worked in cancer research at Roswell Park Cancer Center until his retirement in 2009. Mirek also served as a translator for the International Institute and a consultant for several companies. Mirek was the recipient of several United States and International patents for anticancer drugs and was the author of many scientific publications.

Mirek truly enjoyed his retirement and had many hobbies and interests. Mirek and his wife moved to Knoxville, Tennessee in 2015, after her retirement, to be closer to family. Mirek loved nature and the outdoors, national parks, forests, gardening, planting unusual trees, fruits and flowers. Mirek was a classical music enthusiast and loved to play the violin. Mirek particularly enjoyed woodworking. He made violins, two of which were given to and played by his children, and furniture, including cradles he proudly made for his grandchildren. Mirek traveled the world, taking great interest in historical places and churches. He especially loved his country of birth and spending time with his family and friends. Mirek loved his grandchildren, cheering them on at their sporting events, listening to them play their musical instruments, and playing chess and hiking with them.

Sadly, Mirek developed severe Alzheimer's Disease and later became infected with COVID-19 in December 2020, ultimately succumbing to complications from both in February 2021. For a few short years prior to his decline, Mirek attended CADES in Knoxville, which he fully enjoyed, especially the staff, volunteers, activities, and musical performances.

Mirek's wife of 53 years, Libuše Anna Bobek, PhD, Professor Emeritus, sadly followed him in death, just 19 days later, from COVID-19 as well. Mirek is survived by his son Miroslav Patrick Bobek, MD and his wife Eileen Bobek, MD and their 4 children, Roman, Milan, Radek and Anastázie of Medford, Oregon, daughter Yvonne Andrea Bremer, MD and her husband Richard Bremer, MD and their 2 children, Zoe and Noah of Knoxville, Tennessee, sister Jana (František) Picha and sisters- in- law Jana and Jitka Bobek of the Czech Republic and many nephews, nieces and cousins. Mirek was preceded in death by his parents, Jan and Marie Bobek and brothers Lumír and Václav Bobek.

A funeral Mass honoring both Miroslav and Libuše will be held on Wednesday, March 31, 2021 at 10am at The Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus with Father David Boettner officiating. Live Stream at https://www.youtube.com/user/shcathedral. A graveside service will follow where Miroslav will then be laid to rest alongside his wife at Pleasant Forest Cemetery in Farragut, Tennessee. A celebration of life will be held at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorials be made in Miroslav's name to CADES and to Alzheimer's Tennessee.
