Amateur and trained carpenters will have a weekend just for them.

The 34th annual Woodstock Woodworking Show takes place Sept. 27 to 29 at the Woodstock Fairgrounds.

The weekend show will have more than 85 vendors and several manufacturers – the most exhibitors in recent years – offering a variety of displays and demonstrations, event co-ordinator Gina Downes said.

“Anything to do with woodworking will be there,” she said.

Downes said the event was the first major woodworking show in North America. In recent years, the show has started to expand, with more people attending to see seminars, displays and new products.

“I think in the last couple of years things in the industry seem to be changing,” she said. “There’s more interest in people coming to the shows. There was a period where people went with the internet, but now they’re realizing, by coming to the show, you can see it, touch it, feel it, use it and sample it. There’s more advantages to coming out to the shows.”

Downes said the show will have two dedicated spots for seminars. One will boast a rotating cast giving instructions on band saws, hand tools, hand planes and wood burning. The other seminar area will focus on making hand tools.

The event will also feature the annual Ontario Woodworking Championship, which has people entering their creations into different categories.

The show will offer milling demos, as well as a chainsaw artist creating artistic pieces on site. An artisan building will be making its debut – part of the show’s expansion – with the Marquetry Society of Canada offering a free-with-admission hands-on workshop.

Downes said the show attracts about 5,000 people, with the bulk coming from within a three-hour drive of Woodstock.

She said organizers also host the Hamilton show in November and were at the Toronto show for the first time last February, which has helped draw more people to Woodstock.

“It has a nice feel to it. It’s outdoor and indoor, and there’s multiple buildings to visit. You can walk around and stroll to each different place,” Downes said. “The band mills are there, which you can’t have at other places. We’re able to do more in Woodstock than we can at other places.”
